How repository scanning works

Each repository shows its current branch, how many files changed, and how many commits it is ahead of or behind its remote.
It stays up to date
File-system events refresh a repository the moment it changes. Pro can also fetch from every remote in the background.
What the status badges mean

- Changed files. Four files have uncommitted edits, new files or deletions.
- ↑2
- Ahead. Two local commits haven't been pushed yet.
- ↓5
- Behind. The remote has five commits you haven't pulled.
- ! 2
- Conflicts. A merge or rebase is in progress with two conflicted files.
- ✓
- Clean. Nothing to commit, and in sync with the remote.
The Terminal way, and why an app helps
You can list repositories from Terminal:
find ~/Developer -name .git -type d -prune | sed 's|/\.git$||'That gives you paths, but nothing about their state. To find unpushed work you'd still run git status in each one. Boughwright does that for every repository, keeps it current, and lets you act on it: commit, pull or push without leaving the list.
Questions about scanning
How do I find all git repositories on my Mac?
Add the folder where you keep your code to Boughwright. It searches that folder and its subfolders for .git directories and lists every repository it finds, with its branch and status. In Terminal, find ~/Developer -name .git -type d -prune lists them too, but without any status.
How deep does Boughwright scan?
Six folder levels by default. You can change it from 1 to 12 in Settings, and choose whether to also list repositories nested inside other repositories.
Which folders are skipped?
Folders that are large and never hold your own repositories: node_modules, Pods, Carthage, DerivedData, .build, build, dist, vendor, venv, target and __pycache__. You can edit the list in Settings.
Does the status update by itself?
Yes. Boughwright listens to macOS file events, so a repository refreshes as soon as something changes in it, whether you save a file in your editor or commit in Terminal.
